I am not using any replaygain or anything. I would have expected the difference i.e. realizing DSD's are typically produced with lower db.

WebDSD is best kept DSD. FLAC is PCM, and DSD is not PCM. DSD to PCM conversion is never lossless, not even with lossless codecs. You will always lose quality.
